Musical Instruments

Musical Instruments, this topic is so close to my heart and whenever I see any instrument, I feel to touch it and play with it. Musicians and these instruments are the main force behind creating and working on this knowledge repository platform/blog.

Okay so let me give you a fact: There are in-numerable number of musical instruments exist so it is very difficult to give a number that how many instruments does exist. You will be overwhelmed as you see list of musical instruments reported in wikipedia List of Musical Instruments by wikipedia Similarly list of Indian Musical Instruments Indian Musical Instruments. Broadly musical instruments are classified in few of the categories. This is theoretical and subjective topic but let us touch upon that very quickly.

Major Classification:

  • Percussion: Instruments which are played by tapping or striking them and they product the sound. Best example is Drum, Dholak, Tabla etc.
  • String Based: These types of instruments have strings example: Guitar, Veena, Violin, Ukulele etc.
  • Wind Based: Flute, Saxophone where sound is driven by wind push.
  • Brass Based: Similar to Wind based instruments with slide modification major example is trumpet as air mechanism can be changed with the side valves
  • Electronic Instruments: Some instruments do not fall in any of the above category for example Keyboard, Piano which produce sound based on the electronics.

This is how musical instruments are classified majorly and we can put any of the available musical instrument in one of the above category.

Now this is about the theoretical aspect of musical instruments, I would like to cover at-least one instrument from each of the category in my subsequent blog posts. We will describe them in detail along with playing techniques and factors which affect the sound of musical instruments.
